EU Regulation 2016/429 comes into force on April 21, 2026, introducing stricter documentation requirements for pets entering Europe.

New 2026 EU pet travel rules take effect in April 2026. EU Regulation 2016/429 will come into force on 21 April 2026 regarding the non-commercial movement of pet animals, replacing the current EU Regulation 576/2013.

Beginning in April 2026, enforcement will emphasize stricter documentation consistency. Minor documentation inconsistencies that previously passed informally may now trigger inspection delays at EU borders.

The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination used for travel. If the rabies vaccine was administered before the microchip was inserted, it will be considered invalid for EU entry — a rule that is now being strictly enforced.

New rules will also introduce uniform EU standards for the welfare and traceability of dogs and cats, with consistent regulations for breeding, housing, handling and reproduction in breeding establishments, pet shops and shelters.
